Demeter was an international contemporary art exhibition
held with the Obihiro Racetrack as its main venue,
to commemorate the 120th anniversary of the municipal
administration of Obihiro City in Hokkaido. Artists
made visits to Obihiro to dig up the memories buried
there, read the characteristics of the place, and create
works of art that would only exist in that place. The
Obihiro Racetrack was built as a track for racing draft
horses pulling sleds through an obstacle course. This
kind of racing is called 'banei', a type of horse race
that exists only in Hokkaido. The artists created installations
within the horse stables, each of which are about 40
metres long, on the actual racetrack, and within the
city of Obihiro.
As a related event, many artists in Hokkaido participated
by exhibiting their works in city parks and commercial
areas.
